A selection of recent sketches made around the city.
The neon facades of SF's 'red light' zone.
The view from the terrasse of the Cafe Zoetrope on Columbus.
Behind the Ferry Building waiting for the Sausalito shuttle.
Cat napping on the Hyde St Pier
A mini-sketchcrawl around my neighbourhood Noe Valley yielded these corners of interest.
Funky delapidated little house up on Diamond Heights.
This is how I moved to California! Now on permament display in the Oakland Museum

Vunderba!
How are those saucy little sausalito's?
Great sketches Matt! I particularly like the last four. Terrific.
Beautiful!!! A lot of history in these drawings...even the leaves on the trees paint a real impression and conjure up a thousand stories...Thanks for posting!
i like all of them, great, do you use pencil or you made them directly with ink?
Usually draw straight in ink. Thanks guys!
I'm going to have to commission a drawing of the Bay Bridge one of these days. I have this crazy fascination with the Bay Bridge. It could be the result of driving across it five days a week. Still, your drawing captures its beauty perfectly! Great work! :)
i think you should buy the funky little house!
fabulous drawings!
i want to live in San Francisco, instead of the hague
lovelly as ever. that lumpy tree is the best
Lush work. I particularly like the truck and the boat. Your drawings make me very jealous, both of your mad skills and you being in San Fran.
Gorgeous drawings ! Don't you ever use grids or perspective lines to help you ? This is crazy work.
Thanks for the kind words everyone.
Quentin- there's a certain mental buzz one gets from constructing the perspective mentally then drawing 'on top' of that grid held in the minds eye. Of course that's why the perspective is off in most of these! I find once I'm 'in the zone' I can hold the entire scene in mind then it's just a case of drawing it in-I think it's referred to as 'gestalt' in Drawing On the Right Side of The Brain.
Mick, the lumpy tree was drawn with my eyes closed!
lovely works. it makes want to go outside and star drawing.
Lovely stuff, Matt, as always.
these are great! full of character..makes me wanna go to san francisco haha :) theyd be cool as postcards too
Matt, thanks for the detailed response ! Your perspective looks perfectly fine to me. I'll give this technique a try !
Amazing drawings!!
Cool stuff Matt, love it! ;)
Impressive drawings.
I passed over San Francisco when I visited California last 2006. But drawings seem to suggest that I missed out on a lot of beautiful urban vistas.
Thanks and more power to you.
Many thanks for the comments all. San Francisco is an endlessly fascinating city to draw. Lots more sketches to come . . .
A terrific post full of great drawings! Seeing these really makes me want to go out and draw the world right now!
L
