Back in the life room

It has been almost three years since I was last in a life drawing class. In France I tried to stay sharp drawing people on the street or at the beach but there's nothing quite like a good life drawing session. I've really missed a weekly work-out in the drawing gym but boy did I feel rusty!

I've found a great class in Bristol where there are 5 models all evening- alternating poses between 5 minutes to an hour. It's the biggest class I've ever been to- there must have been close to 50 artists!

The drawings shown here were all 5 minute poses. Struggling with the time limit, materials & finding a good vantage point I found myself falling back on 'comfort' drawing tricks. I've signed up for 10 weeks so I hope to break out of those old habits.

Will, who organizes the class, has a blog here.

Crikey - if it's been 3 years, you did fantastically, well done!

Really lovely, fresh, true sketches. I always think the short ones are the best. Can't believe the 50 artists in one space though: could be a record!

The space was BIG-the class is held in a grammar school assembly hall so there's plenty of room for 50 artists or more. It's divided into 4 areas with 1 or 2 models for each section.

Nice work Matt. The break doesn't show. I'm taking a well deserved one myself. Planning on going the same route with a sketchbook and observing in public instead. I'll probably be checking your work frequently when I get into it more. ;)

Very interesting to see your life work. The last drawing especially is beautiful. Lovely sweeping strokes

Five models to choose from...room to roam about, you're making it up.
The little sketch of the two models in bathrobe and towel is a bit like beach drawing but it's fab.
