Gesture Drawing Class

This is a test video made under ad-hoc conditions; i-phone balanced above my shoulder on a shelf, me drawing while trying to keep an eye on the phone and the paper in view. Not ideal but several people have asked me to video myself drawing in gesture class and I hope to make some better quality clips soon. These drawings aren't very good and I break all the rules you're supposed to use but this will give you an idea of my approach. 1 minute poses and I'm drawing slooooooow! It's weird to watch yourself draw.

  1. I really enjoyed this video, Matt! Very impressive. I'm amazed by your accuracy, no guide lines, no errors just the one line, every time. Just like that, wow.

I would have liked to see the model's poses, it would be nice to see you interpretation of a pose. But I guess that's difficult to do.

  2. This was awesome to watch!! Love your drawings, but I must admit, I'm left somewhat confused :D
Many people say that gesture shouldn't be contour drawing and I've been forcing myself to try and follow this rule, only I don't like the drawings I produce as I don't find them that interesting, even if it's what it's 'meant to be'....
Yet here, I find these drawings much more interesting and full of personality.
    I'll experiment tonight :D

  3. Thanks guys!
J: Tricky with the model-they are often nude and that would pose problems with YouTube-even if the model gave their permission. I'd definitely like to do a video where we show a clothed model though.

L: I know, like I say, I'm breaking all the rules. I try and hold the line of action/construction etc. in my mind and draw the character 'around' it. Whatever works. Above all, I'm aiming for sketches that communicate an attitude and have a spark of life.

  8. The videos are great. I'm in the period of studying everything I could get my hands on and this is just an amazing insight to how you approach your sketches (even if you break the rules ;))
